Some are rare, others are only passing, others else stay there all year long. From the big whale to the small porpoise, all of them marine mammals, these animals live, breed and die in open sea or along the coast, and are full members of the Mediterranean ecosystem. Six species among the most common are presented here, of which here is the list in order of decreasing size : the Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), the Sperm whale (Physeter catodon), the Long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), the Risso's Dolphin (Grampus griseus), the Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the Striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba).
