ScanFont Description

ScanFont is an interesting tool that comes in handy when you want to create fonts from graphical images. For example, you can scan your signature and assign a key to it. The interface of the application is familiar to the one of a basic picture editing tool. Graphical representations can be drawn from scratch, or imported from file (via the file browser or 'drag and drop' method). So, you can use some basic editing tools, such as pencil, brush, line, text, fill, rectangle and magic wand, aside from the zoom, undo and redo functions. If you draw multiple shapes to be used as separate characters for your new font, ScanFont can easily split them after you enable this option from the 'Operation' menu. In the following step, you can assign names to the newly created characters. Furthermore, you can make the app change the tracing scale factor, merge or split symbols. From the 'Options' area you can set margins and the vertical alignment for glyphs, as well as enable the tool to skip very small spots when automatically splitting symbols, among other settings. The font processing application requires a low amount of system memory and CPU, has a good response time and contains user documentation. We have not come across any issues during our evaluation. However, the interface needs some major improvements; the software app has not been updated for a very long time. In all fairness, beginners need some time to learn how to use ScanFont.
