SMPlayer Description

SMPlayer is intended for media playback. It supports many video and audio formats without your needing to install any extra codec on your machine. The application can play not only the files you keep on your hard disk or a portable drive but also YouTube clips. Likewise, it allows streaming video and audio contents from online TV and radio stations. In addition, the program has the full support of DVD playback. It can be said that this player has two interface layers. The first one is extremely simple to use as it includes the well-known playback buttons. In this regard, I regret that it does not support drag-and-drop operations. The second layer is uncovered when you start navigating through the menu and it probably requires a little more experience on the part of the user. There are various skins available; however, frankly speaking, all of them look quite old-fashioned. Probably the main advantage of SMPlayer is the way it puts you in total control of media playback. Thus, besides starting and pausing, you can also jump to other parts of the video, browse DVD chapters and change speed. Moreover, its ability to remember the last played position in a file is always welcome as well. Another benefit is configurable subtitles, which you can even find and download from within the program. Likewise, there is a video equalizer with various effects to change your viewing experience. Finally, you can also apply filters, which you can use even to simulate a 3D projection from the flat video. In general, SMPlayer has many more features than just these reviewed here, which means that it really deserves your attention. Luckily, the player works smoothly even when dealing with very large files. One inconvenience is that the YouTube browser needs to be downloaded separately. One more thing: SMPlayer is open source and it is being constantly improved and available for free. Pedro Castro Editor rating:
