Editor's review: This is a simple tool to calculate the resistance value of resistor value from the color bands printed on them. Resistor is a basic building block in Electronics circuitry. For using these appropriately, you need to know the value of a particular component so that there are no mistakes in placing them in a printed circuit board as per design. The values of these components are often written on them with color bands. These are usually three color bands. The first and second one represents numerical values in first place and the second place. The third band represents the number of zeroes to be added at the third place to arrive at the value in ohms. A fourth band is used to represent the tolerance of the value. A gold band at this place indicates a tolerance of 5% while a silver band will indicate a 10% tolerance. While working engineers become used to these conventions and are able to read the value just by looking at the bands, this is a good tool for beginners and students. The interface is appropriately very simple. All you really need to do is set the values of the three bands by looking at the subject resistor. For each band you have a drop down list of the permissible colors. You simply click on the color including the tolerance value. The application returns the value of the resistor and the corresponding tolerance. This is a free tool and is very good. Engineering students, in particular, will find it very useful.
