Coefficient of Congruence Description

Coefficient of Congruence calculates the coefficient of congruence for comparing factor solutions from different studies or different samples. It is typically used to determine the factorial invariance of solutions across samples or studies. Two columns of factor loadings on the same set of variables is required as input. Factor loadings must have been obtained using the same extraction method (i.e., ML, principal factors, etc.) and same rotation method (i.e., promax, varimax, etc.). For oblique rotations, the same type of loading coefficient must be used. Gorsuch (1983) reported that "the formula has generally been applied to the factor pattern" (p. 285). That is, the factor analyses from different studies or different samples must have been conducted exactly the same to ensure comparability.
