SearchCal Description

SearchCal is a tool developed by the JMMC Working Group "catalogue of calibration sources" to assist the astronomers in this calibrator selection process for long baseline interferometric observations. SearchCal builds a dynamical catalog of stars with all useful information for the selection of the calibrators used in optical interferometry. This tool is not restricted to a particular band of observations, and can be used from the visible (V band) to the mid-infrared (N band). The strategy for the selection of potential interferometric calibrator is based on the gathering of a large set of information from the CDS in Strasbourg. This information is primarily used to determine some estimates of the angular diameter of the source. Based on some criteria concerning the visibility of the source for a given wavelength and projected baseline, the user can decide whether this star can be considered or not as calibrator. This tool also provides some elements helping at detecting multiple, variable or complex sources. Of course, the few catalogs published providing a list of observed or carefully selected stars are also requested for this search. Concerning specifically the N band, for which no catalog has been published so far, the program finds the possible calibrators in the list of mid infrared interferometric calibration sources established by van Boekel et al. in the frame of the MIDI consortium, and managed by ESO. Give SearchCal a try to see what it's all about!
