ProChat is an efficient and easy to understand piece of software functioning as an instant messenger client for Local Area Networks, being suitable for both professional environments and home usage. The program needs to be installed and run using administrator privileges, otherwise there is the likelihood that it will not function properly. Once installed, ProChat automatically connects to the network and displays the other available users, their default username being the one they logged into their Windows account with. The groups into which people can carry out conversations are called channels, which are signaled using a hashtag (#) symbol, all logged users being automatically assigned to ‘#Main’, yet having the option of creating their own channel, on a specific topic, also being able to join multiple channels simultaneously. ProChat supports two distinct connection types, namely ‘Broadcast’ and ‘IP Multicast’, the latter being aimed mainly at larger Local Area Networks, with multiple routers and subnetworks. Once users log in, they can change their status to ‘Active’, ‘Do Not Disturb’, ‘Away’, ‘Offline’ or ‘Gaming’. When sending a message on a group, the utility can optionally assign it a timestamp so others are able to tell how long ago it was sent. In addition, it displays the name of the user who is speaking, so others will know who they are dealing with. The application supports the option to send ‘MassMessages’, which includes all the members of a channels, even enabling users to leave ‘Offline Messages’ to those that are not currently connected. Despite featuring a Graphical User Interface, ProChat can also run in command line mode, so users can choose whichever best appeals to them, on condition that they have the proper knowledge in order to use the latter option, as it is not for beginners.
