No need to say that “Mahjong Escape: Ancient Japan” is a Mahjong game pretty much the same as the other games alike. This game offers two modes to play: Classic Mode and Emperor’s Adventure. In the later mode, the game has an underlying story going on which begins in 8.500 B.C. That would explain the ancient word in the game title. In this mode, you must unlock over 10.000 years of ancient wisdom to collect the lost Emperor’s treasures. The goal of the game is the following: you must clear the board of tiles by matching them off in pairs. However, you can only select tiles which have at least 1 side free, and which have no other tiles on top of them. In the Emperor’s Adventure mode, you must match the Magic Gold tiles to unlock 10.000 years of ancient Japanese wisdom and collect the 12 Emperor’s treasures. Each time you complete a level you take another step in the adventure. On the top section of the game screen you’ll see a timeline sort of thing which indicates your progress in the adventure. In each board, you can choose the tile set you like the most. In this game there aren’t many options though. To change the tile set while you’re playing a board, click on the MENU button on the screen and choose the “Change tile set” option on the pop-up menu. There are six set from which you can select yours. You can change a tile set in the middle of a game with no problems. Seasons and Flowers tiles are the only tiles that match which are not identical. The 4 Flowers can be matched with any Flower, and the 4 Season tiles can be matches with any Season. There are also Magic Tiles which help you along your adventure. Gold tiles matching wins the layout, and all remaining tiles are removed. There are other types of Magic Tiles. You are awarded points for each pair of tiles matched. Bonus points are awarded for matching identical tiles back-to-back. You receive bonus points for every tile remaining on the layout when the Magic Gold tiles are matched.
