Index Reader Description
Index Reader is a simple application that aims to provide you with the means to extract information from the “index.dat” file. This file is created by Internet Explorer and includes a list of all the accessed web pages, cookies, images and resources loaded from the Internet. If you need more details about your Internet activity or you simply want to view the data that is saved by the browser on your computer, this app can help. It is able to locate the DAT files and to translate their content to a simple list of links that can be copied to the clipboard or exported. The history file also includes the access date for each page or resource and can be exported to a plain text file that can be viewed or edited with other applications. The interface of the program is easy to understand and the beginners can get accustomed with its features in a few minutes. The included documentation explains each function in great detail which should make your job easier. During our test, the program detected the DAT files on Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 but failed to locate them on a Windows 7 installation. On the other hand, it does offer you the option to select the files manually if you know the exact location. The extracted information is accurate and the links from the history are displayed almost instantly. Unfortunately, the application has not been updated recently and it does not provide support for the latest Internet Explorer versions. With a simple interface and quick response, the Index Reader is a good solution for analysing “index.dat” files on the systems that use older Internet Explorer versions. However, the list of features is rather short for the price required for removing the limitations from the software. You can find other alternatives that can provide you with similar or extended features for a lower price or for free. Reviewed by Sorin Cirneala, last updated on May 17th, 2013
