It uses Extensible Storage Engine(ESE) to perfom recovery (often pronounced "Eazy" or "JET Blue"). In other words, there is no need to have installed Microsoft Exchange Server. You just need only some .dll's from Exchange binary directory: ese.dll, exchmem.dll, exosal.dll, jcb.dll. You can perform "Soft Recovery" against databases - this process takes place when you mount crashed Exchange stores or when you "Replay" logs to database from snapshot backup. You also can perform "Hard Repair" against an Exchange Server database file such as the Priv.edb, Pub.edb that was really damaged because of hard drive disaster.
