CombiNatOr Description

The CombiNatOr synth was developed upon the idea that new waveshapes can be created by cycling through the classic waveshapes over time. If you split a cycle of a wave into four equal parts, and play a different waveshape each time - you'll get a whole new waveshape that starts off as a sine (for example), continues as a pulse wave, changes to triangle and finishes as a saw - all this for one cycle. This is an uncommon synthesis method called Rotor Synthesis. I put a large scope in CombiNatOr so you can see what you're doing and how the parameters actually combine the four waveshapes. CombiNatOr is not perfect yet, and I use it mostly as monophonic synth. PlugIn parameters: ================== Oscillators section: -------------------- 1-4 - Here you can pick a different waveshape for each quarter-cycle. Except for the standart waveshapes I've added a "fat" sawtooth (called "fatso"), a DC offset (e.g. a constant level for the duration of the quarter-cycle) and two Audio Ins (coming from the synth's side-chain). DC level - If you chose to use DC in one of the quarters, this is the DC level. Pulse Width - If you chose to use Pulse wave in one of the quarters, this is the pulse width. Note that on some settings this would actually mean a DC quarter, but at minimum or maximum level. Velocity - affects the Pulse width by velocity. When led is OFF there's no effect. LFO - how much will the internal LFO generator affect the Pulse Width. Again, when LED is off there'll be no effect. RotoR section: -------------- KeyFollow - When ON, RotoR speed is affected by the notes you play, so each cycle will be identical to the next one. This makes RoToR bahve like a wave-able synth. Sync - When ON, the RotoR (and the four oscillators) are synced to the keboard. This means that everytime you play a note on your keyboard, the RotoR will start from oscillator 1. This makes the sound more stable and assures you that each time you play, the CombiNatoR will produce exactly the same waveform. For more random and loose sounds, turn Sync OFF. Octave - RoToR speed by octave. The value of this slider is shown in the scope display, as a hirizontal yellow line. When the horizontal line is set to zero and KeyFollow is ON, the RotoR speed is exactly the same as the pitch of the note you play. You can go as high or low as 10 octaves. Higher octaves would add harmonics. Lower octaves would make the RotoR spin so slow you can actually hear the waveshapes change - which gives a very dynamic effect. Fine - Allows you to fine tune the RotoR's speed. When set to maximum, it adds exactly an octave to the RoToR speed. Super-Fine - Allows you to further fine-tune the RotoR's speed. Maximum value adds tone. Smooth - Set to the lowest position, the RotoR will switch from waveform to waveform with no crossfade at all. This produces a "pulsey", buzzing sound at high rotor speeds, and a distinct rythmic change among waveforms at low speeds. Maximum smoothing will crossfade from waveshape to waveshape, producing a smoother sound at high RotoR speeds and a flowing change of character at low speeds. Velocity - controls how much effect will velocity have on RoToR speed. 4-Pole LPF section: ------------------- ON - on/off for the filter. Cutoff/fine - sets the filter cutoff frequency. Resonance - the resonance of the filter. KeyFollow - how much will the actual note played affect the cutoff frequency. Set to maximum (extreem right) it will follow the keyboard 1:1. If the LED is off, the cutoff frequency is not affected by the note played. Velocity/LFO - controls how much effect will velocity and LFO have on the cutoff frequency. LFO section: ------------ Shape - you can choose a Sine wave or a Triangular wave for the LFO SPEEd - the LFO speed Retrig - when ON, LFO will be retriggerred each time a note is played. When OFF, LFO will run freely. Delay - fade-in time of the LFO. When LED is off, LFO will be in full effect immideately when a note is played. Modulation EG section: ---------------------- A/D/S/R - an envelope generator. RoToR/Cutoff/PW/DC - sets how much will these parameters be affected by the mudulation envelope. When LEDs are off there'll be no effect. Amp section: ------------ A/D/S/R - the overall amplitude envelope. Velocity - sets how velocity will affect overall level of the RoToR. When set to minimum (LED is off) RoToR will play at full level all the time. As you increase the value of this slider, you'll have to play with more and more velocity to reach maximum level. LFO - controls the ammount of LFO affecting the overall level. Used for tremollo effect. Master section: --------------- Transpose - transposes the sound up to two octaves higher/lower (according to LED display). This does NOT transpose the RoToR speed (even if RotoR KeyFollow is on), so playing C3 with no transpose would sound completely different than playing C4 with transpose set to octave down. Porta - portamento speed. When LED is off portamento is off. Scope - sometimes the scope display causes you to use your eyes instead of your ears when you create a sound. If that happens (don't be shy it happens to everybody) use this switch to turn off the scope display. MONO - makes CombiNatOr monophonic. This saves on CPU power and I think a bit more reliable right now... When Mono is off CombiNatOr is 4-voice polyphonic. Volume and CLIP - CombiNatOr can produce quite loud signals. Use Volume to control the overall output of the synth, and always keep your eyes on the CLIP LED.
