A River DOES Run Through It - Macintosh Description

The Kaskaskia River runs through the heart of the Lake Shelbyville Recreation Area where you'll find something for everyone. Early pioneers followed the Kaskaskia River up from the Mississippi to settle alongside the Kickapoo Indians who originally lived in the area. In 1970 a section of the Kaskaskia was dammed to create the 11,200 acre Lake Shelbyville, spawning numerous recreation areas. Whether pitching a tent in a hike-in campground or snuggling under an Amish quilt in an elegant resort or relaxing at a bed-and-breakfast by night, visitors to the lake area spend the day hiking, hunting, fishing, swimming, boating, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, picnicking, windsurfing or golfing. Interpretive events and festivals occur throughout the year, including the annual Festival of Lights each Christmas, extending for miles around the lake via the Snowflake Trail, including the Snowflake cross-country/hiking trail. This year-round recreation area features state, federal and private recreation facilities and services.About the AuthorPhotojournalist Judy Rosella Edwards grew up seven miles from Lake Shelbyville. She watched the damming of the Kaskaskia in the early seventies and was among the first to hike the trails, swim at the new beaches and camp with her family in this newly created recreation area.
