Michelangelo Description

The manuscript Vaticano latino 3211 of the Vatican Library is a collection of poetic rhymes, sketches and rough copies of letters by Michelangelo Buonarroti. It is composed of 111 sheets of paper (ff. I-II, 1-108), written in the 16th century (between 1534 and 1563) and measures 340x220 mm. It contains a great number of poems written in the hand of the author himself on loose paper, which was then collected into a sort of notebook. The paper is often re-used, and generally of poor quality. At the beginning of the volume (f. 3r) is a banderole with an inscription which, translated, says: “Michel’Angelo Buonaroti, The Poems, hand-written by the same, with some Letters, of paper, in-folio,” with the signature “Ful. Vrs.”, initials of Fulvio Orsini. He was one of the most erudite Roman scholars of the sixteenth century, a great collector of old books and a philologist, and many precious manuscripts of other important authors passed through his hands. Orsini donated most of his precious library, including this autograph of Michelangelo, to the Vatican Library at the beginning of the 17th century, where it has been kept since then with great care.
