Open source streamlined solution for software distribution and deployment Simula Conduit (Conduit for short) is a streamlined system for general distribution and deployment (installation/uninstallation and related tasks) of software on multiple platforms. Simula Conduit is almost completely written in Python. The system currently supports Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux (mainly Ubuntu).Conduit streamlines the distribution/deployment processes by providing a framework for software projects to publish metadata about their software in a platform-independent way (based on the DOAP RDF vocabulary), and tools that are able to use these data to automate installation. The system supports explicit dependencies between software, and handles them automatically during deployment. Functionality-wise, Conduit offers benefits relatively similar to conventional Linux package managers such as APT.Here are some key features of "Simula Conduit":· Uniform handling of deployment tasks (installing/uninstalling) on supported platforms (Linux, Windows and Mac OS X)· Automatic handling of dependencies both when installing and uninstalling· Automatic handling of version upgrades when installing· Standard integration of installations with the OS (by e.g. placing executables in $PATH)· Database of installations ensures that software is properly uninstalled· Consistent visuals, while adhering to platform conventions, thanks to Qt-based GUI· Standard model for publishing software; provider-maintained RDF project descriptions are exposed through a central portal· Dependencies between software may be expressed according to a sensible model, allowing them to be handled automatically during installation
