Ice9 is a free audio plugin that provides a soft-muting function that attenuates the gain before a single sample over the threshold has passed. The radical attenuation will occur instantly if the threshold is exceeded by a severe and potentially dangerous amount. In addition, Ice9's soft muting employs Volt's technology to let you know in a gentle manner that you're over the limit, without the rude click which a hard mute-unmute would cause.
