Remote Help Assistant Description

Remote Administration for Linux users Most advanced Linux users are used to supporting friends and relatives when they switch to Ubuntu. Technical support is usually done by instant messaging or over the telephone, which tends to be slow and confusing. This assistant securely provides or accesses a (VNC) remote desktop or a remote shell over the Internet. The system is designed to be easy to use, with one unavoidable exception: if both users are behind NAT routers (e.g. home wireless routers), one of them must be able to configure their router or must have SSH access to a server elsewhere on the Internet. This assistant guides you through the process of securely providing or accessing a remote desktop or a remote shell over the Internet. If a friend has sent you here to get this program so they can help you with a problem, please do the following:1. click on the blue "external downloads" link below2. save the file3. set the file's properties so you have permission to execute it as a program (your friend can help with this)4. run the program (probably by double-clicking on it)5. Read and follow the instructionsThis project needs to be tested on as wide a variety of computers as possible. Please send bug reports saying which versions of what distribution the program works on.Remote Help Assistant will run with degraded functionality unless the following packages are installed:* x11vnc OR krfb OR vino* openssh-server* openssh-clientThe assistant uses SSH internally to secure the connection. This means that one user must have installed the openssh server package, and the other must have installed the openssh-client package. The user that wishes to view the other person's desktop usually installs the server, as they are more likely to know how to install packages. The SSH server can (and should) be disabled by default once it's installed - the assistant will start an SSH server when it needs to.Without a VNC server, the assistant will only be able to share a text-based session (which you should use to install a VNC server). Requirements: · Python · PyGTK
